Basically, the best image that comes to mind is peer pressure. Everyone submits, and you are too afraid to question or step out of line for fear of going against the grain. Unfortunately, it reveals a very weak sense of self, low self esteem and it breeds people who do not walk through the natural maturing steps of wrestling through issues and beliefs, but instead allowing others to make decisions for you. In a way it seems safer because if you let others make decisions for you, you will never have to be responsible for the outcome. But God wants us to mature, to grow up. Not to be spiritual infants, but spiritual adults. It is extremely difficult to let this paradigm shift fall because you almost loose your sense of self in the process. It is a dying process. People feel as though they are afraid they have backslidden, but are indeed growing even more in maturity and the image of Christ. We need to learn to give up on our fears and trust that our righteousness comes from Christ. Fear is never ok. No matter what spiritual justification you give it. Even fear of not being righteous. If we are in Christ, and walking in the Spirit, he will guide us into all truth. Fear steals and destroys and should not be part of the equation. If it is, you wont be far from spiritual abuse and manipulation.
