I found your web site because my son who is a children's worship leader and performed many volunteer positions such as leading VBS, directing children's plays and choir and small group leader for middle school boys. His degree is in education and teaches in public school.
He was constantly called to the pastor's office because they felt he was not coming under their authority. I told him God and His Word were his authority. After 2 years of this, I ask to be in one of these meeting. This is when I heard about coming under their "covering". I voiced that I had never heard of such and told them my protection was from God not the fallen man. And where would my protection be if the church leader stumbled. They did not like how I felt and tried to convience me that we needed their covering. They made up stories about parents complaining about my son because the parents would tell me what a great job he did leading their children. They would say they could not protect him from these attack because he would not submit to their authority. He told them God would protect him if he really was under attack.
We were holding a small group for middle school boys at my home and had boy from inside and outside the church but kept it affiliated with the church. Then they told us we had to bring it inside the church and no longer do it at my home. I could not believe this. With much prayer we decided to continue at home under our own ministry with the support of some of the parents and local businesses. When we told them this they said he was no longer allow to participate in the church in any way and sent a letter to all the parents saying they were breaking away and from my son and did not approve of his decissions and would not support him and that they should consider doing so, also.
This all just happen yesterday 5/2/12. We are going forward with this ministry and have plans to go into the schools in our area.
Thank you so much for all this information about "covering" because I am 62 years old and have been a believer for many years but was having a hard time with this and my son was getting close to being influenced by it. He was starting to question the vision God had given him for this ministry and was starting to wonder about a "covering". Thank you!

Basically, the best image that comes to mind is peer pressure. Everyone submits, and you are too afraid to question or step out of line for fear of going against the grain. Unfortunately, it reveals a very weak sense of self, low self esteem and it breeds people who do not walk through the natural maturing steps of wrestling through issues and beliefs, but instead allowing others to make decisions for you. In a way it seems safer because if you let others make decisions for you, you will never have to be responsible for the outcome. But God wants us to mature, to grow up. Not to be spiritual infants, but spiritual adults. It is extremely difficult to let this paradigm shift fall because you almost loose your sense of self in the process. It is a dying process. People feel as though they are afraid they have backslidden, but are indeed growing even more in maturity and the image of Christ. We need to learn to give up on our fears and trust that our righteousness comes from Christ. Fear is never ok. No matter what spiritual justification you give it. Even fear of not being righteous. If we are in Christ, and walking in the Spirit, he will guide us into all truth. Fear steals and destroys and should not be part of the equation. If it is, you wont be far from spiritual abuse and manipulation.
